Date:1725 - 1735 (c.)
Description:Designed in the eighteenth-century by Jean Dassier (d.1763). This side shows John Selden (1584-1654), scholar, historian and lawyer who became a leading figure in the Parliamentary opposition to Charles I. While the exact symbolism of this medallion's pairing of Shakespeare with Selden is unclear, it illustrates how at various times the poet's image has been invested with political meanings.
