Description:This wool picture on cloth depicts H.M.S. Serapis, a wooden ship which was converted to steam in the early part of the 18th century. This type of woolwork picture stitched on ship's canvas was an almost exclusively British and naval phenomenon, largely produced in the mid 19th century. Sailors were very proud of their ships and England's sea-faring tradition, and at this time portraits of ships were as important and popular as those of houses. Size when stitched onto card: 542 x 717mm
