Presented by the National Art Collections Fund, 1935. The cartoon appeared in Punch on 4th February 1888. The inscription describes the conversation between the two men: "Well, ta-ta, old man - my people are waiting / up for me, you know!" / "Why, don't you carry a latchkey?" / "Carry a latchkey! Not I! A latchkey'd / spoil any fellow's figure!" Du Maurier was born in Paris, but lived in London, where he became established as an illustrator and cartoonist. He worked for Punch from 1864 until his death, producing two cartoons each week. Du Maurier's grand-daughter was the novelist Daphne Du Maurier.
