Description:

Plate made by Barr, Flight & Barr

Worcester

c.1808-1812

A porcelain dessert plate with a blue underglaze and enamel painting and gilding. There is a scratched B mark on the base. In 1783 Thomas Flight (1726-1800) bought the Worcester Warmstry House factory for his sons Joseph (1762-1838) and John (c.1766-1791). The Flight firm was awarded a Royal Warrant by George III in 1789 and opened a London showroom on Coventry Street. In 1792 Joseph Flight went into partnership with Martin Barr (c.1757-1813) and they were joined by Martin Barr Junior (c.1784-1848) in 1804. During this period the firm enjoyed great success and it was at this time that this plate was produced. When Martin Barr died in 1813 the firm became Flight, Barr & Barr, with George Barr joining the partnership. In 1840 Flight Barr & Barr merged with Chamberlain, the new company would later be known as the Worcester Company.
