This oval shaped medal with a loop for suspension was struck to commemorate Princess Alice, the second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who died on 14th December 1878 of diptheria aged only 33. She had married Prince Louis of Hesse and by Rhine in 1862 making her Princess Louis of Hesse and the Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine as well as HRH Princess Alice of Great Britain. She had seven children including Victoria who later became Marchioness of Milford Haven and was the grandmother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, consort of Queen Elizabeth II. The obverse features the bust of Princess Alice facing right, the reverse features the inscription 'IN MEMORY/ OF/ PRINCESS ALICE/ BORN 1845/ DIED 1878'.
