English brass token, 1788
Diameter 24mm
The obverse features the laureate bust of George III facing right. The inscription reads 'GEORGIUS III DEI GRATIA', Latin for 'George III By the Grace of God'. The reverse features a spade shaped shield topped by a crown. The first quarter bears the three lions of England and the single lion rampant of Scotland, the second quarter bears the three fleur-de-lys of France, the third the harp of Ireland and the fourth the coat of arms of the Royal House of Hanover. This token is a replica of the gold guinea of the period and would have been used for gaming or advertising.
