Description:
English medal, to commemorate the death of the Baronet Sir Robert Peel
Diameter 45mm
The obverse features the bust of Sir Robert Peel facing right with the surrounding inscription 'SIR ROBERT PEEL BART'. Underneath the bust is the name 'T. R. Pinches/1840', possibly the name of the artist, with a further inscription, 'FROM A MODEL BY WEEKES', below. The reverse features a short obituary. Peel was the Conservative Prime Minister of Great Britain from the 10th December 1834 to 8th April 1835. He was also responsible for establishing the Metropolitan Borough Police Force while Home Secretary in 1828. It is from Peel's first name that the term 'Bobbies' to refer to policeman came about.
