Date:1795
Description:
English imitation guinea, brass token 1795
Diameter 23mm
The obverse features the laureate bust of George III facing right. Directly underneath the bust is the name 'Simcox', the maker. The inscriptions around both sides are the same as on a genuine gold guinea. The reverse features the Coat of Arms of the British-Hanoverian monarchy on a spade shaped shield with a crown above. The 'spade' guinea was extensively copied in the 18th Century and imitations such as this one were often used for advertising purposes or as counters for gambling.
