English copper token, c.1790
Diameter 28mm
The obverse features the shield of the Freemasons' Company of London - three castles with two above and one below a chevron that bears a pair of compasses. Above is a globe upon which is an eagle and at either side are two leopards rampant. Below on a banner are the words 'AMOR HONOR ET JUSTITIA', a motto associated with the Freemasons. Around the outside is the inscription '24 NOV 1790 PRINCE OF WALES ELECTED GM'. The reverse features a pyramid inside which is a cherub surrounded by various Masonic symbols including the distinctive square and compasses in the bottom right corner. In the top corner underneath the 'all seeing eye' is the letter 'G' for George. Around the triangle are the words 'WISDOM STRENGTH AND BEAUTY', the three 'lesser lights' that help to make the Masons better men. Around the edge is the Masonic motto 'SIT LUX ET LUX FUIT', 'Let there be light and there was light'.
