Description:
English silver sixpenny token
Diameter 21mm
The obverse features a large central '6' engraved with the words 'SIX PENNY TOKEN'. There is a 'W' at the end of the downwards curl. The outermost decoration is a wreath of olive branches. The reverse features Britannia seated and facing left. She carries an olive branch in her right hand and her left hand rests on a wheel at her side. To her right is what appears to be a cannon, making it appear that she is sitting on a gun carriage. The inscription reads 'BRITANNIA'. The Napoleonic Wars led to a shortage of regal coinage in the early 19th Century. From 1811 many businesses and companies produced their own token copper and silver coinage of which this is an example.
