Date:1820 - 1829 (c.)
Description:
English silver shilling, 1820s
Diameter 23mm
The obverse features the bust of George IV and the inscription 'GEORGIUS IV DEI GRATIA', Latin, 'George IV By the Grace of God'. The date should be below the bust but is worn off on this example. The reverse features the rose of England flanked by the shamrock of Ireland and the thistle of Scotland with a crowned lion above. The inscription reads 'BRITANNIARUM REX FIDEI DEFENSOR', Latin for 'King of the Britains, Defender of the Faith', although this is barely legible.
