Description:
English silver shilling, 1707
Diameter 32mm
The obverse features the draped bust of Queen Anne facing left. The inscription reads 'ANNA.DEI.GRATIA', Latin for 'Anne By the Grace of God'. The reverse features four shields bearing the four symbols of Ireland (the harp), England (the three lions), Scotland (the single lion rampant) and France (the three fleur-de-lys). The shields are aranged around the Garter Star and above each is a crown. In the angles of the shields are alternate roses and plumes which tell us that the silver for this coin came from the Pitcoale & Seacole Company. Around the outside is the inscription 'MAG.BR.FRA.ET.HIB.REG.1707', Latin abbreviated meaning 'Queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland'.
