Description:

Birmingham medal, 1887

Diameter 39mm

Medal struck to commemorate the golden jubilee of the reign of Queen Victoria. The obverse features the diademed bust of Victoria facing left and the inscription 'VICTORIA REGINA' (Queen Victoria). The reverse features the sun rising over the sea, with two hands clasped below a banner bearing the word 'FRATERNITY'. Above is the inscription 'IN COMMEMORATION OF THE JUBILEE REIGN OF H.G.M. QUEEN VICTORIA'. Below is the makers stamp of 'LEWIS/ BIRMM' and a radiate crown with the date of Victoria's ascension (1837) and the date of her golden jubilee (1887) underneath. At the base of the medal is a serial number, 'RD 58147', flanked by two dots. There is a pierced hole for suspension, this is not part of the original design.
