Date:1860 - 1880 (c.)
Description:This framed print belonged to George Eliot and depicts the head of Christ. It may be the work of German artist Friedrich Overbeck (1789-1869). George Eliot met him while in Rome, in 1860, and it is possible that the character of "Naumann" in Middlemarch (1871) was based on him. Transcript of manuscript label: Given to John Sibree MA by George Eliot [erased text]. Geo. Eliot was at the time engaged in the T? of ? "Liber Jesu" & attached this picture to the frontispiece of the book. Transcript of typed label: Suggested that this was by Overbeck, a German artist working in Rome and founder of the Nazarenne school. [of art] G.E. met him in Rome in 1860 (Cross) and Naumann in Middlemarch (Chap.22) was dressed as he was. V. & A. [Victoria & Albert Museum] identify it as being after the French painter Paul Delaroche (1797-1856) - a portion of a larger work. vide [see] G.E. Meille's "Christ's likeness in history and art", 1924. p149. May 1968. George Eliot (born Mary Ann Evans) was a local authoress based in the Coventry and Nuneaton district, from 1819-1880.
