Date:1687 - 1689 (c.)
Description:This inscription transcribes information written on the front of the portrait. Unfortunately neither inscriptions are easily legible, but the attribution of the picture to Thomas Wright, and the account that he copied it from a picture in his own collection, is clear. Identity Number: SBT 1994-19/123 Wright, Thomas, was born c. 1700 in Scotland and studied painting under Jamesone. Came to England when young and painted many distinguished people including Prince Rupert, Colonel Blood. In 1686 he accompanied Lord Castlemaine on his embassy to Italy and published an account of his travels. He seems to have formed a collection of pictures and is said to have copied a portrait of Shakespeare in 1688.
