Description:This whirligig is in the form of a man and woman sitting in a horse-drawn trap. It is made of polychrome wood and metal, and is mounted with a propeller. As the propeller turns, the horse's legs move as if trotting. A small hammer between the feet of the driver clatters, simulating the noise from the horse's hooves. Whirligigs are hand-carved and painted articulated weathervanes, generally home-made, and vulnerable to the elements. It is British and comes from the mid 20th century. Height 518 mm, Length 655 mm, Width 132 mm.
