Description:This is the detail of the earth stopper from a mixed media work dating from about 1840. It may have been by George Smart, but is not signed. An earth stopper would stop us a fox's earth the evening before a hunt and he is confronted by a sweep. A cutting stuck on the reverse tells the story of the picture, he was 'on his way home, when by a sudden turn of the Lane he is brought plump upon what he conceives to be nothing more or less than the D***l, but which in fact is a simple Sweep and his Donkey'. Framed size Height 360m, Width 480mm. Depth 48mm
