Description:

A brass octagonal shaped box from London, made by Evans & Co. This is a medical instrument and would have been used for letting blood. There are knobs on the top and side and the lever on the top produces blades through the six slots in the base.

Blood letting was a common medical practice up until the 19th century. Blood was one of the four 'humours' that were thought to be responsible for health and illness. Sickness was thought to be caused by too much of one of the humours. It was thought that by letting blood, the bad humour would be let out of the body, leading to better health.
