George Louis Palmella Du Maurier (1834-1896)

Presented by the National Art Collections Fund, 1935. The cartoon appeared in Punch on 22nd August 1896. Du Maurier was born in Paris, but lived in London, where he became established as an illustrator and cartoonist. He worked for Punch from 1864 until his death, producing two cartoons each week. Du Maurier's grand-daughter was the novelist Daphne Du Maurier.
