Birmingham gold medal, c.1894

Medal awarded to H. Pratt of the Leamington and South Warwickshire Cycling Club for completing one hundred and sixty nine and a half miles in twelve hours. The main body of the medal is a an ornate shield with two layers of mouldings above and a loop for suspension with a ring attached. The obverse features the date, a banner with 'L&S.W.C.C' (Leamington and South Warwickshire Cycling Club) inscribed on it and a central escutcheon with the monogram 'HJP' surrounded by a wreath. The reverse features the inscription '12 HOURS/ H.PRATT/ 169 1/2 MILES'. To the bottom left are the hallmarks, the first, 'V&S', is the makers mark. The second and third hallmarks refer to the gold quality and content, in this case the medal is 9 carat gold with a proportional gold content of .375. The fourth hallmark, the anchor, is the Birmingham assayers mark and the final hallmark is the date letter, possibly an 'M'. To the right is the makers stamp which reads 'VAUGHTON/ BIRM'. The medal is presented in a red box with blue velvet and pale blue satin linings.
