Cornwall copper penny token, 1811
Diameter 34mm
The obverse features a mine pumping engine with the date below. The inscription around the outside reads 'CORNISH PENNY'. The reverse features a fish with blocks of tin and possibly copper. The inscription around the outside reads 'FOR THE ACCOMMODATION OF THE COUNTY'. The Napoleonic Wars led to a shortage of regal coinage in the early 19th Century. From 1811 many businesses and companies produced their own token copper and silver coinage of which this is an example.
