Date:1794
Description:
Norwich copper token, 1794
Diameter 28mm
The obverse features a decorated archway, inside which is a key dividing the date. The inscription reads 'PAYABLE AT BULLEN AND MARTINS/ MARKET PLACE NORWICH'. The reverse features a shuttle above a plough and the inscription 'SUCCESS TO THE PLOUGH AND SHUTTLE'. Tokens such as this were produced from 1787-1797 when there was a shortage of regal copper coinage. This led the Anglesey Mines Company to produce its own copper penny and halfpenny tokens, a practice that became widespread during the period.
