English bronze penny, 1908
Diameter 30mm
The obverse features the bust of Edward VII facing right. The inscription reads 'EDWARDUS VII DEI GRA:BRITT:OMN:REX FID: DEF: IND: IMP:', Latin, abbreviated for 'Edward VII By the Grace of God King of All the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India'. Below the bust are the initials 'De S' for G. W. De Saulles, the designer. The reverse features Britannia seated and facing right. At her side is a shield bearing the Union Jack, on which she rests her right hand. Britannia is seated on rocks by the sea and carries Poseidon's trident in her left hand. The date is below and the inscription reads 'ONE PENNY'.
