Description:This is a detail of an oil painting on canvas depicting a streetscene in Richmond, Yorkshire. This is Harry Pickall, private postman to the Marquis of Zetland in 1847 when this picture was painted by J S Newton. Newton included his father's business in the painting, as over the door on the left is a sign reading 'Newton, Painter, gilder, paper hanger'. Also in the foreground of the painting is Jackie Patterson, the cleaner of the local privies.
