Description:This is an oil painting on canvas depicting Henry Hamilton, a servant of farmer Ralph Walker, holding the rope of a prize heifer. It was painted by an artist of the English Provincial School about 1844. An inscription on the reverse reveals more, reading 'Maria, 5 years old, bred and fed by Ralph Walker, Middleton Grange. Also Henry Hamilton, an old servant who has lived in the family upwards forty years... Live weight 154 stone, 14lbs to the stone... Slaughtered by Mr. Joshua Hodgeson, New Stranton, April 2nd 1844.'
