Atkinson painted Outdoor Still Life while he was a student in South Yorkshire in the 1950s. The painting is a carefully constructed composition. The dominant lines of a rusting iron frame create the sense of perspective, moving the eye around the image from the fence in the background to the rusting discarded wheels in the foreground. These 'everyday' garden objects are painted from life, using muted tones. This painting is important because it is one of very few works from this era which have survived. Atkinson himself is very fond of the painting and was especially keen that it should come to Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum, having lived in Leamington Spa with his family since 1968.
