Joe Tilson (born 1928)
Cut Out and Send
Screenprint on paper
1050mm x 710mm
A framed screenprint of a pair of blue coloured scissors cutting out orange and red coloured detailed square images against a yellow background. They are framed within a black thick square of dotted lines. The main background colour is white. The title Cut Out and Send is printed between the blades of the scissors. The images refer to stills from silent film noir movies like King Kong and Laurel & Hardy. The artist has also added pictures from the moon, taken at different points during 1960.
Tilson is a mixed-media artist. He worked as a cabinet maker and carpenter, 1944-6, and served in the RAF, 1946-9. He studied at St. Martin's School of Art, 1949-52 and RCA, 1952-5. He became associated with the Pop Art movement, chiefly through Young Contemporaries exhibitions. His first solo exhibition was held in 1962 and since then he has exhibited regularly in London (Marlborough Galleries), New York and throughout Europe. In 1984 he was awarded a prize in the Bradford International Print Biennale and the Grand Prix at the Zjubljana Biennale, 1985. Tilson's work is in many public collections, including the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and Tate Gallery.
