Description:Lyndall Phelps (born 1958)
Sculpture from Knitted surgical masks in four colours blue, red, white and green, 2001
This work was purchased with support from The Wellcome Trust
Silence is part of a body of work by Phelps which considers the relationship between surgical craft, women's needlecraft and the needlework made by women prisoners as a form of hard labour. Significantly, the word 'surgery' is derived from the Greek 'Kheirourgia', meaning handiwork. The masks, made through a painstaking process in the four colours used by Johnson & Johnson for their disposable surgical masks, suggest the gentle inhalation and exhalation of breath. They also carry the more sinister connotations of hands clasped over mouths and enforced silence. The artist describes her work as 'exploring notions of loss, fragility, silence, control and healing utilizing both social and personal histories.'
