Cupid and Psyche, 1847-1854

Oil on canvas

1420mm x 1130mm

The tale of Cupid and Psyche dates back centuries. Possibly the earliest written tale appeared in the 2nd Century AD. In short, it is a love story based on the Gods of Roman Mythology. Psyche is a princess who is so beautiful that the Goddess Venus becomes envious of her. Venus orders her son, Cupid, to make Psyche fall in love with a monster. However, Cupid himself falls in love with Psyche. They come together but the condition of their love is that Psyhe cannot look at Cupid, who only visits at night. But she disobeys this rule and he leaves her as a consequence. Psyche begins to search for Cupid but Venus does not make her search easy and sets her a number of tasks that she must complete. However, Cupid is unable to watch her suffering and pleads their cause to Jupiter who argues with Venus on their behalf. He wins her over and Psyche is made immortal and the two are married in heaven.
