Self Portrait, 1680

Oil on copper

410mm x 340mm

An interior with an elegantly dressed male figure dressed in black with rich lace frill and cuffs. He has long wavy brown hair hanging down to his shoulders and stands beside a low table with the tapering fingers of his left hand holding up part of his black silk gown. His right hand is holding the page of a book which is lying open on a crumpled oriental rug on the table. The draped curtain on the left reveals a bookcase with two visible shelves of books. On the far right is a relief in classical style, possibly an antique sarcophagus, showing a battle scene with two warriors on horseback charging towards the left, the one in front carrying a large shield.

The painting shows all the hallmarks of the work of the Leiden school of 'fijnschilders', of which Gerrit Dou and Frans van Mieris the Elder are best known. Their style is characterized by extreme attention to detail and polish, and their work was once highly admired and collected.
