Description:
A white ceramic inhaler with a cork and glass mouth piece. The piece of sponge that would have been around the mouth piece is missing. It has been labelled 'Dr. Nelson's Inhaler'.
The instructions for use read: 'Dr. NELSON'S INHALER. DIRECTIONS FOR USE - To inhale the Vapour of Hot Water the water must be Boiling and the Inhaler about half full. For Infusions, the Ingredients should be placed in the Inhaler adding Boiling Water thereto. All liquids Volatile or otherwise should be dropped on the Sponge and the mouth-piece replaced.'
This inhaler was given to the donor's father, Percy John Robinson, by the Warneford Hospital on Radford Road, Leamington Spa. It was to be used as part of his treatment for breathing problems after being gassed in the First World War. Dr Nelson introduced his inahler in the mid nineteenth century but his name was used on many similar devices produced later by pharmaceutical companies.
