Fra Angelico was born Guido di Petro in 1387 in Tuscany and died in Rome in 1455. He was also known as Giovanni da Fiesole, Fra Beato and Fra Giovanni. In 1407 he took his vows to become a Dominican Friar at Fiesole, moving to Florence in 1436. In 1445, Pope Eugenius IV invited him to Rome to work on frescoes in St Peter's. These frescoes depicted the life of St Etienne and St Laurence. He worked at the Vatican again from 1447 to 1449 on scenes from the lives of St Stephen and St Lawrence. This fresco is one of those that Fra Angelico completed during this period, and appears on the north wall of the Niccoline Chapel. The copy was published by the Arundel Society in 1865.
