Description:This is a hard backed register book listing assessments for poor relief in the parish of Leamington Priors.
It has a faded marbled cover with leather spine and corners, and an inscription written in ink on the front. The book lists properties, occupiers and assessments according to the street and is dated 18th January 1832.
Poor relief was part of the Poor Law, which had been in existence since 1601. It was administered by local government in parishes. The purpose of the Poor Law was to provide relief for the dependent poor, those members of the parish who were unable to look after themselves either long term or short term.
