Description:A letter from the essayist and historian Thomas Carlyle (1795-1885) to his tailor Thomas Garthwaite, with instructions for a new set of clothes. Carlyle has attached a textile sample to show which material he wanted his trousers and waistcoat to be made from. At the time of writing the letter, 3 December 1855, Carlyle lived in Chelsea.
