The inscription on the gravestone reads: 'Behold the tomb / of William Abbots / who died 1 March 1805. / First founder of the cele- / brated spa water baths / at this place in 1736-he / devoted his whole time and / fortune to accommodate / the public; and lived to see / his benevolent works merit / the approbation of the / most eminent physicians.'
