Description:A small Ruskin Pottery vase made at Smethwick, West Midlands, c.1933

It is made of a high temperature flambe fired earthenware. There is a narrow openening at one end of the narrow neck. The base is bulbous in shape and is decorated with burgundy, grey and dark green mottling with a purple hue.

Ruskin Pottery was established in 1898 by Edward R Taylor (1838-1911) and his son William Howson Taylor. The firm was founded as the Birmingham Tile and Pottery Works at Smethwick. William Howson Taylor changed the name to Ruskin Pottery in 1904 after the artist, poet and critic John Ruskin. Ruskin Pottery produced a small number of high qulaity pieces. The firm received international recognition for the variety of glazes that were produced. The pieces were very expensive due to the large number of firings the pots received. The firm ceased production in 1935 and the unique recipes for the glazes were destroyed so that they could not be replicated.
