Description:Balafon from Sierra Leone, probably 1890s. The balafon is a percussion instrument which originated in the Mali empire in the 12th century and is now found across West Africa. A wooden frame supports 14 wooden bars, with one end higher than the other. The gourds suspended beneath the bars resound the notes, and two sticks with carved ends are used for hitting the bars.
