Date:1900 - 2000 (c.)

Description:This is a Duffield short-wave therapy unit. It was used in physiotherapy treatments at the Royal Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa. The short-wave therapy unit used deep heat to tone wasted muscles, and to develop the blood supply in wasted limbs. The affected part of the body was placed between splints to ensure that healthy muscles did not stretch the weak muscles. Then a current was passed through the body, this stimulated the muscle and caused it to move. The current also caused the blood vessels to dilate. This improved the blood supply to the affected area.
