Description:Shakespeare’s themes for his early poems are rooted in his education. The stories and imagery in Venus and Adonis, and later in The Rape of Lucrece owed much to the usual Elizabethan school curriculum in which the study of Ovid and other classical writers formed the basis for Shakespeare's education. Shakespeare's Venus and Adonis had a major influence on contemporary writers, both literary and academic, who adopted the six line stanza, with its distinctive rhyming pattern and the rhetorical style of its language ornamentation. See: Venus and Adonis, lines 907-930. Full title: William Shakespeare, Venus and Adonis, London, Richard Field, sold by J. Harrison, J., 1594.
