Date:1825 - 1875 (c.)

Description:This form of puzzle, now known as a jigsaw, was originally called a dissected puzzle.

The printed picture was applied to a thin sheet of wood, which was then dissected, or cut up, into pieces. It was kept in a wooden box with a sliding lid. This puzzle is called 'Mamma's Apple Pie'. When made up, it shows how an apple pie is made - from picking the apples to serving up the pie for dinner. Dissected puzzles often had an educational theme. Children were expected to learn as they played!
