Description:A large piece of fossilised pine resin, 60 million years old. Although it appears to be as hard as stone, amber can be heated and shaped. This has made it very popular for use in jewellery making from ancient times. Relative to its size amber is extremely light and will float in water. Large pieces used to be found on the shores of the Baltic Sea. The seashore on the east coast of England is the most likely place to find amber, but not as big as this. 185mm x 135mm
