Description:A portrait of the Admiral Hedworth Meux in 18th century fancy dress.
This photograph was taken at a costume ball, Bal Poudre, at Warwick Castle in 1895.
Frances Evelyn Brooke (or Daisy), the Countess of Warwick, became famous for staging such glamorous occasions.
Bal Poudre means literally 'Powdered Ball' - this was a lavish recreation of a ball at the French Court in the 18th century, when the fashion for powdered wigs was high fashion.
