Description:
French silver franc, 1917
Diameter 22mm
The obverse features Marianne wearing the Phrygian, also known as liberty, cap walking to the left. She appears to be about to throw something which she holds in her right hand and is carrying a bag in her left arm. In the background the sun is rising and the inscription reads 'REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE'. There is a name below, possibly that of the designer, which is illegible on this example. The reverse features an olive branch with the denomination above and the date below. Around the outside is the motto 'LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE', 'Liberty Equality Brotherhood', and to either side of the date are the Parisian Privy Marks of the torch for the Engraver General and the cornucopia for the Mint Director.
