The title page of the paper-back pamphlet, or ‘quarto’ version of Shakespeare’s plays often carried an advertising by-line concerning the play’s popularity. For A Midsummer Night’s Dream it is clear that the play had been performed several times by the company of actors to which Shakespeare belonged whose patron was the Lord Chamberlain of the court of Queen Elizabeth I.
