Catherine Yass’s Guy’s Cliffe series is based on the medieval legend of Guy of Warwick, a heroic knight, who was said to have retired to live as a hermit in a cave under the cliff. Paul Heber-Percy, director of the Heber-Percy Gallery and descendant of the family who inherited the Guy’s Cliffe estate on the outskirts of Warwick, is shown looking up at the shadowy ruins. Yass’s unnatural colours replicate those produced by psychics to show the auras surrounding people and places. This unusual form of representation allows Yass to suggest the presence of the layers of history.
