Description:
Tithe Pig figure group, c.1900-1927
The group illustrates an old fable making a joke about the clergy. The farmer's wife is refusing to give up her tenth pig unless the parson also takes her tenth child. The fable originated in the medieval period when the church charged a tithe of 10% of people's annual earnings. This one is a copy of a Walton figure group.
The group is made up of a farmer and his wife who is holding a baby and a parson (right). It is a rural scene, the man holds a brown pig and a money bag and there are two hens and a basket of eggs in the foreground. There are bunches of wheat to the right and left of the base.
