William Smith was born in Fenny Compton and moved to a grand house at 37 and then 28 the Parade (where Tesco now is). He kept the premises for a while but let them before he moved to 58 Bath Street in 1875. William bought the shoe shop at 58 Bath Street, where he had been apprenticed. He ran the shop until his death in 1929, after which he was succeeded by his son Cecil. During the 17 years until its closure in 1956, the shop was run by Cecil's wife Muriel and their son Hugh.
