Date:1837
Description:British copper token, 1837
Diameter 22mm
The obverse features the bust of Queen Victoria. There is a figure on horseback on the reverse. The inscription on the reverse reads 'To Hanover'.
When Victoria ascended to the throne of Great Britain she could not assume the Hanoverian titles of her predecessor, William IV, as this was restricted to the male line by German law. Instead the title was assumed by her cousin, the unpopular Duke of Cumberland, who became George V of Hanover. 'To Hanover' tokens such as this one are generally assumed to celebrate the departure of the Duke of Cumberland from the British Isles. The obverse features the bust of Queen Victoria facing left with the inscription 'VICTORIA REGINA' and the date below. The reverse features a man on horseback, possibly the Duke of Cumberland, wearing a crown, carrying a sword and riding over a dragon. The inscription reads 'TO HANOVER' and the date, 1837, is the year in which the Duke inherited his new title.
