Sir Terry Frost (13th October 1915 - 1 September 2003)
Madrigal, 1949
Oil on canvas
710mm x 910mm
Purchased with the assistance of the National Art Collections Fund, 1998
Frost discovered the song Madrigal by W.H. Auden when he was in Leamington Spa library carrying out research for an assignment whilst studying at Camberwell School of Art. The song was written for the film Coal Face, which was produced by the General Post Office film unit. The film's score was composed by Benjamin Britten. Frost was attracted to the song because not only did he feel an empathy with the miners of the Midlands, but it described a miner leaving work to meet his 'Kath', which was also the name of Frost’s wife. The painting clearly captured the spirit of the song, because Britten bought the related study.
