Date:1856
Description:This British, percussion, military rifle is a shorter (2 band) version of the (3 band) P.53 rifle-musket, correct designation is Pattern 1856 Short rifle.
Production of this type of rifle began in November 1856 and it was issued to the Rifle Brigades and the 60th Regiment, the Cape Mounted Rifles and the Royal Canadian Rifles and all sergeants of the Line Regiments.
This one was probably made before the outbreak of the American Civil War when standards declined in an effort to meet wartime demands. But it was not official issue and it was probably owned by a volunteer or served as an officer's personal weapon.
The overall length is 49 inches, barrel length 33 inches stocked to 5 3/8 inches of the muzzle with a bayonet bar for a yataghan sword bayonet on the right side of the barrel. The furniture is P.53 design, but hardened iron instead of brass. The P.56 has two screw clamp bands retaining the barrel and the sight is graduated to 1100 yards. The calibre is 0.577 inches. Those made after 1858, like this specimen, have 3 groove progressive rifling. Completely correct and orginal including it's nipple protector and chain. It has Birmingham proof marks on the left side of the barrel with the figure 35 between them. The lock has the maker's name, G. Sanders, on the inside.
